Today the Google logo has been transformed into a work of art similar to the work of Alexander Calder to celebrate his 113th birthday.

He is most well known for his mobile sculptures, but he also made paintings, lithographs, toys, tapestry, jewellery and household objects.

His mobiles are perfectly balanced with flat bright coloured sheet metal which spin almost independently of each other.

If you use a browser that supports the HTML5 canvas tag (Chrome, Firefox 3.5+ Safari or IE9)  you’ll be able to play with it, spinning the mobile and watching the shadows spin below.

The Google logo has again been transformed into a work of art, just as Sir George Gilbert Scott transformed many hundreds of workhouses, schools, churches and cathedrals into architectural masterpieces.

His most notable work however was the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras station which boasted 300 rooms, with many costly fixtures including rooms with gold leaf walls, a fireplace in every room and a grand staircase.

The hotel was shut down in the 1980′s and re-opened in on the 5th of May 138 years after it’s original grand opening in 1873.

Google is celebrating the 450th anniversary of the Cathedral of the Protection of Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat, more commonly known as St Basil’s Cathedral.

The Cathedral was erected in Red Square, Moscow in 1561 and took 6 years to construct.  It marks the Geometric centre of the city.

The Google Logo has been transformed into a 7 second video of the of the event (which actually took about 1.5 hours). This was said to be the longest lunar eclipse in over 11 years!

Today Google’s Logo is celebrating the 67th birthday of the Mr. Men and Little Miss creator Roger Hargreaves. The British author wrote 90 books in the Mr Men and Little Miss series which have had sales over 85 million worldwide in 20 languages.

The Google changes each time you access the page and features a total of 16 different doodles from Mr Happy to Little Miss Chatterbox.

119 years ago in Ithaca , New York John M. Scott and Chester Platt invented the dish, which they first derved as the “Cherry Sunday”. After attempting to trademark the term “Sunday” it became known as a “Sundae”!

This is paying tribute to Jules Verne, author of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, A Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Around the World in Eighty Days. His birthday was today, if he were still alive he would be 183 years old today!

How much time did you spend playing around with the logo pretending to be Capitan Nemo instead of working?

Many people have complained about how much CPU the Google homepage is using today. We are lucky the machines in the office are sufficiently powerful to handle the interactive fun. The normal simplicity of the site is usually well renowned for quick and fast results, but there are workarounds to get through this lack of speed. One of them being to use the built in Google search function on most browsers. I personally look forward to seeing what Google come up with next.
